I'm no hair expert, but I would imagine that they don't actually cause hair to thin out. If anything, using a curling iron would cause heat damage to your hair and it would seem that your hair is thinner because it's become so brittle from the curling iron.

Yes... you can fry your hair. I learned that the hard way a couple of days ago with a crimping iron. For my hair to take curl or wave, I have to hold the curling/crimping iron in my hair for a long time. I guess I overdid it. Now it feels all funky and looks bad in the back :-( I need to buy a leave in conditioner for it.

no, but if you curl your hair every day like i do than you really need to use a heat protectant!!!! because i use to curl my hair everyday for school and i didn't use a heat protectant and i had major split ends within two weeks. and my hair broke off so and know i have lit tle stupid hairs sticking out of my hair. But no it doesn't thin your hair out i still have a huge head full of hair but it is know harder to manage.

It can't thin your hair out but overuse can cause you hair to break off. Using a ceramic curling iron will not cause your hair damage and it won't break it off either. I've been using it for over 5 years and my hair has not had any damage to it.
