Was told that it could and not grow back in places

umm. hair doesn't really do that. but if u want to keep on the safe side, trim it little by little until u get to the length you want.

nope. only things with nerve endings go into shock and although your scalp has them, your hair does not and cutting it won't affect your scalps nerves. you can breathe easy! :)

(former stylist and salon owner) No, it will not go into shock.. Don't know who told you that LIE, but hair does not have "nerve endings: In fact, cutting thin hair helps to thicken it, and will make it healthier..If you are more comfortable starting with cutting off an inch or two, you can do that, and go shorter, as you are comfortable with the shorter length.. Sometimes it's less stressful on your "nerves" to do it gradually.. So go for it.. and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results..
